Hunting Lull...

Hunting Lull...

Deer and bear hunting are over. The DNR has forced you to take your ice house off the lake. No worries my friends, your hunting skills will be tested soon! You may  wonder....What caliber gun? What camo do I wear? There will be no need to gas up the four wheeler or get an expensive guide. You will need. Boots, a water bottle, and a ice cream bucket. I am talking about mushroom hunting, or picking. That's what others call it.

Mushroom picking has been something that I have grown up with. I know as soon as the poplar trees leaves are as big as a squirrels ear, it's time. Morels are my families favorite. Just walking through the woods on a sunny spring day, trying to find the first one of the group. If you are with my dad it's always him! As far as where to pick them, what terrain? Dead trees, or south side of hills and marshy bottom valleys tend to be good. But it depends on what part of the country you live in.

Cooking them properly is most important. Dipped in egg yokes and covered in Saltine crackers is the only way to eat the tiny morsels. But I feel the real reward has always been the hunt. It's mother natures little way of playing hide-n-seek. When I bring my friends, the kids have so much fun you'd think they found gold when they find the first one you'll hear them squeal. That is the best, to share it.

It's a small thing to get excited about but to find the first one is a great thing!  To see its pattern against the forest floor, one then two then three. Happiness!!! Even if you do not care for mushrooms or you get skunked by the mushroom fairy. It is never a bad day in the woods.
