Soil Testing: The First Step to a Successful Food Plot

Soil Testing: The First Step to a Successful Food Plot
The assurance of your well spent time, effort and money toward food plots and deer herd management depends on taking the proper steps. One of the most overseen steps is proper soil testing and care. According to Whitetail Institute the #3 reason food plots fail is, “No Soil Test is Taken.” This is third behind too many deer and number one, “The food plots don’t get put in.” A soil test should be taken every year to determine what your soil needs, fertilizer type to be applied for your type of plants, and the pH levels. In Minnesota the University of...

I Hope No One Was Watching

I Hope No One Was Watching
This year I finally came to the realization that I was going to be forced into making a decision that I have been putting off for years.  There was a much needed surgical repair that had to be done on my right foot that I could no longer prolong.  When was this lengthy procedure with a lengthy recovery time going to work into my already busy schedule?  How would I work it around the Ohio Whitetail hunting season? Bang'n Horns
I'm sure everyone has heard of or seen the videos/stories of how well rattling works in Texas. I've heard so many people complain that it only works in Texas, so they don't try bang'n horns in their own woods. These people are missing out! I've had a lot of success bang'n horns in Texas as well as my home state of Ohio. I have three sets of rattling antlers of different sizes, basically small, medium, and large. I generally choose which antlers to use based on two things; time of year and size of bucks in the area. If I were...

Kinda Hunting The North Dakota Badlands

Kinda Hunting The North Dakota Badlands
As many of you know I recently took a trip out to North Dakota with the family to try get myself a Badlands Whitetail. Let me start by saying this wasn't only a hunting trip for me. It was also a family vacation with my wife and three children, not to mention the ten or so friends who also came with. It was a big, well organized Horse Back Riding trip out to Medora. We had four rigs, each equipped with trailers hauling mostly Horses and Tack, but also fun things like John Deere Gators and Yamaha Four Wheelers, and don't...

Teach Your Daughters to Hunt

Teach Your Daughters to Hunt
Life is too short not to teach your daughters how to hunt.  This sport isn't just for men anymore and it's having a resurgence of newcomers with the popularity of movies like the Hunger Games.  This became apparent to me when I started being referred to as the main character of the movie, Katniss.  The more I heard it the more confused I was getting.  I'm not one for sitting around watching TV, movies or reading novels.  I wasn't sure what people were referring to at first.  Outdoors is where you'll find me.  Or working, have to work to live and...
